Assisting parents in encouraging language learning with their children

The Issue

Many multilingual and/or immigrant parents often find themselves struggling to teach their children their native language or foster any sort of interest in general. As the child of an immigrant myself, this issue was personal to me as well as two of my groupmates. So, our goal was to create an enjoyable and interactive learning experience for language learning in children

Our team drew on personal experiences and conducted interviews with parents, educators, and children to uncover why fostering interest in language learning can be so challenging. We also reflected on childhood artifacts meant to encourage learning, which often left us disengaged. From this research, we identified three guiding design principles: Cultural Connection, Mutual Interest, and Longevity.

Despite all our research, our biggest hurdle was figuring out how to actually move forward. Tasked with generating 100 ideas, 25 ideas each, we struggled with wildly different and often incohesive concepts, some so unclear that our professor wrote “???” in response. After critique, we still felt lost and behind, but we managed to find a vague sense of direction and pushed ahead with the ideas that sparked the most interest.

With a vague sense of direction, Kaitlyn, Joy and I focused on creating concepts based off of our previous ideas. We felt each had its own merit but ultimately ended up pursuing Joy's idea: A simple yet effective learning card system

Going forward, we conducted user testing using rudimentary language cards, facilitating a demo of how a parent and child would use these cards. Through this, we gained clarity and insight into how this could foster a positive language learning environment.

Box Design:

Box Design:

We all worked to find the ideal box design with the goal of making, eventually agreeing that Katherine's catlike design was the best fit. (She made the wonderful 3D Renders as well!)

At this point, we had almost everything figured out, and all that was left was making our poster and creating our video. Each group member contributed to the poster while I focused on animating and editing the video.

This project was one of the most enjoyable design experiences I’ve ever had. It provided me with valuable insights into design research and the effective design of products for users. Collaborating with my teammates throughout the process was a lot of fun, and we all learned a great deal from each other!
